Three Voices From the 2024 Lineup

What can you expect at Detect 2024? Our intern Laura gives you an insight into three artists from the Detect lineup.

Our intern Laura has listened to three artists from the Detect Lineup 2024. This is what JakoJako, La Chica and Dobrawa Czocher sound like - three very different musicians who have each found their own voice.

jakojako – in a complex sound universe

“When you hear a sound in the environment, say, a car passing by, you don’t appreciate the complexity until you think how you might synthesise it.”

JakoJako on last.fm

JakoJako, who mainly works as a live performer, uses modular synthesis in her productions and on stage. "Depending on how you configure your system, you can create a completely different instrument every time. I love it when it surprises me." When she's not in the studio, she advises established artists on their systems at Berlin synthesiser mecca SchneidersLaden.

Having already met with the Detect Ensemble at Beethovenfest Bonn in September 2023, we will get to hear her spherical and booming sounds with the Detect Ensemble in a classical, experimental context as well as in the context of a DJ set.

la chica – a dynamic, knowing voice that unites worlds

"Je vois la musique comme un acte de psychomagie."

La Chica on RadioFrance

In her music, the Venezuelan-French artist unites two worlds in a collage of sound textures, interweaving traditional heritage with various modern influences and breaking with musical norms in the process. Her piano is her own orchestra; her concerts create a dialogue between the piano and the artist.

La Chica's new album, dedicated to her late brother, endeavours to be authentic in a world where the weight of social networks quickly demands an illusory perfection. For this reason, the vocal recordings are also favoured, on which natural sounds can be heard.

La Loba does not necessarily represent the legend of a she-wolf, but rather the image of a female witch who is marginalised by the patriarchy. She has the ability to bring new life through her sacred song. La Chica understands this legend as a feminist song full of energy, which she dedicates to the feminine so that people can connect with the wild, intuitive side of themselves, which is very powerful.

dobrawa czocher – moving & virtuoso

"I find it extraordinary when music can paint a picture of a place in your imagination."

Dobrawa Czocher on mezzanine

Dobrawa Czocher grew up in a musical family and started playing the cello at the age of 7. She soon became inseparable from the instrument and decided to dedicate her life to music. She is a graduate of two renowned music academies: She studied at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw in the class of Professor Piotr Hausenplas and at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold with Professor Alexander Gebert. Czocher has won prizes at several solo and chamber music competitions and has taken part in numerous international masterclasses and music festivals.

Between 2008 and 2010, she was a scholarship holder of the National Fund for Children. In 2017, Dobrawa became a member of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and in September of the same year she became principal cellist of the Neue Philharmonie Berlin. She has been principal cellist of the Szczecin Symphony Orchestra since 2018. Czocher has performed in many prestigious concert halls in Poland and abroad, including in Germany, Lebanon, Serbia, Austria, Turkey, Portugal and the UK.

As a musician, Czocher loves to expand the sound spectrum of the cello and to oscillate between classical and contemporary music. Her long career as an award-winning chamber and orchestral musician means that she is comfortable mixing philharmonic music with alternative approaches. Her great talent lies in combining perfect cello technique with boundless imagination and expressiveness.

She has been working with her good friend, pianist Hania Rani, for many years. In 2015, they released the album "Biala Flaga" with their arrangements of the music of Polish rock star Grzegorz Ciechowski, which brought them their first success and led to the even more ambitious "Inner Symphonies", released by Deutsche Grammophon. With her friend Hior Chronik, she has played at the Eurosonic Festival in Groningen (Netherlands), among others. Dobrawa's motto is to never stop growing, and last year she once again lived up to this motto when she started composing her own music. One of her pieces, entitled "Timelines", was included in "Project XII" and released by the legendary Deutsche Grammophon. Her first solo album "Dreamscapes" was released on 27 January by BMG / Modern Recordings.
