In autumn 2024, four artists and artist groups worked on their projects in rural tranquillity. The venue was Ein Ding der Möglichkeit eG - a country farm with a hotel in the north of Germany, where we have already been able to realise various Detect events.
Photographer Sophia Hegewald has been attending our festival for many years and always surprises us with her eye for beauty and movement. She was also a resident.
Sophia worked on her own artistic projects and documented the residencies with her camera. Among other things, she met the band AFAR and captured their rehearsal process on video...
against an almost too romantic backdrop
Wendland already offers some beautiful views and moments. Historic round villages, wide fields and exciting views. Thanks to the fact that there is virtually no air pollution here, Joseph and Elena from AFAR were able to experience a very special natural spectacle in October 2024: Northern Lights in Germany!
The Orchester im Treppenhaus and the Detect Ensemble were also guests as residents. The director of the ensemble, Paulina Sofie Kiss, remembers:
In Wendland, we alternated between basic discussions and rehearsal work in the ensemble. It's like a beauty treatment: taking a close look at everything, ironing out mistakes - and all with a lot of wellness. The place is so nice and quiet, but there's still no oppressive loneliness. You can meet people or avoid them. And it's simply idyllic whatever the weather.

an intimate concert experience
AFAR and Detect Ensemble played a workshop concert for farm residents and neighbours in the 200 square metre roof truss of the barn at the beginning of November. Presenting the work of the last few days, weeks or months is always something special.

The best moment was the listening session with the Detect Ensemble and AFAR during the residencies. It was touching to experience the closeness and intimacy, to hear the music in the space where it was created and to get a sense of what happens in this place.

about detect lab
Since its foundation by the junge norddeutsche philharmonie in 2015, detect has stood for a place of encounters and experiments with sound, space and people.
With the detect lab residency programme, we offer artists the opportunity to engage intensively with their materials. The projects developed during the residency period are presented on site in Wendland and at national detect events, in particular the Detect Classic Festival, and digitally.
We will keep you updated!
The detect lab is a project of Detect Sounds gUG and Ein Ding der Möglichkeit eG.
The 2024 autumn residencies and the supporting programme are funded by the Stiftung Niedersachsen and the Ministerium für Wissenschaft und Kultur des Landes Niedersachsen (Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony). Supported by the music funding of Norddeutscher Rundfunk. Supported by the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung and the Sparkasse Uelzen Lüchow-Dannenberg. The project is part of the Musikland Niedersachsen network.
