Sophia Hegewald

Finally, something is happening in the classical world – new concert formats are being created, music education is no longer a foreign concept, and you can even find women conducting. In short, things are becoming more colorful and creative. And what about the photos? Are the photos of classical music stars, dressed in evening wear, leaning on their instruments and staring stiffly into the camera, really still appropriate?

Sophia Hegewald wants to give the world of classical music a facelift with photos that fit the spirit of the times. As a trained oboist, she also knows the world of classical music from the perspective behind the music stand and is always looking for new forms of expression and exciting visual compositions to do justice to the music.

As a freelance photographer, Sophia works a lot with artists from the young cultural scene. On the other hand, she designs and photographs campaigns for established institutions such as the Theater Dortmund or the Oper Frankfurt. Sophia is part of the Tonali Bühnenakademie and a scholarship holder of the Fotoszene Köln.

Since 2022, Sophia Hegewald has been photographing the Detect Classic Festival and other Detect events. In fall 2024, she will be a resident video artist at detect lab.
