Cellist Sophie-Justine Herr fittingly titled her solo debut on PASCHENrecords “:INNEN.” This recording is a labor of love for the dedicated musician: she has selected five modern works by five international female composers from five different cultural backgrounds. The result is a multifaceted album featuring works by Younghi Pagh-Paan, Kaija Saariaho, Judith Shatin, Elisenda Fábregas, and Teresa Grebchenko, which explores the full range of the cello’s capabilities.
Sophie-Justine Herr grew up on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, where she first became deeply involved with historical performance practice and contemporary music. Today, these two areas shape her artistic life, while she also continually explores the boundaries of her instrument as a guest artist in other genres. As a cellist, singer, and composer, she has collaborated with artists such as Dan Bay, Kabuki, and Max Clouth, and performs regularly with the Trickster Orchestra. In Frankfurt am Main, she organizes her cross-genre festival “Fluide Klänge.” Sophie is the principal cellist of the ensemble reflektor and a cellist with the Isenburg Quartet. In addition to her role as a mother since August 2025, she is currently working on her new album of works by female composers, “:INNEN Vol. II.”
