Maerie C. Fricke · trying to reach out

‘trying to reach out’ is a walking performance about the search for connection. Drawing on the practices of partisan radio stations, the work takes up unrecorded accounts of the resistance and makes them tangible through the gesture of fleeting reception. The performers wear specially developed frame antennas with integrated AM medium-wave radios. Whilst walking together, they pick up existing radio stations as well as stations they have set up themselves in the surrounding landscape. Through movement and orientation, voices emerge from the static. ‘trying to reach out’ interprets tuning into a frequency as a search for a connection to a place, to other voices and to the possibility of reaching one another.

about Maerie C. Fricke

Maerie C. Fricke is a visual artist. She has just left Vienna and is on her way to Düsseldorf.

She works with sound, material and transformation, and sees her works as open-ended processes. In doing so, she seeks out the quiet moments and collective processes of resilience. Her works navigate the realms of listening, experimentation and encounter, exploring how relationships form and what connects us to one another, even under social pressure.
