Lennart Smidt

Lennart Smidt (b. 1990) is a jazz pianist, composer and producer. He moves between composed and improvised music. His solo debut album “Boomerang” (2025), recorded at Funkhaus Berlin, realised his vision of a diverse “deep listening” album.

Following his jazz studies in the “New York comes to Groningen” programme, subsequent travels to Brazil and many other countries deepened his broad musical understanding, as did his work as a pianist, keyboardist and producer in jazz, funk, pop, avant-garde and punk. Having originally grown up in Hanover surrounded by classical music, the musical boomerang became a reality when the various influences on the solo album were reflected in his own music.

The result is a deeply positive energy that evokes a wide range of associations. Some elements are reminiscent of a Berlin take on the Harlem Stride, others of classical influences ranging from Chopin to Satie or impressionistic ragtime, whilst still others bring to mind Monk or the elemental force captured on the piano.

Having been involved in interdisciplinary stage projects since 2017, his live shows have also taken on a life of their own, for example through the use of sound-controlled light bulbs. The Lenn Smidt Organic Trio is currently working on a new album. Since 2020, Lennart Smidt has been active in various ensembles within Berlin’s jazz and improv scene.
