Concert @ detect classic festival 2025

Wittig and his ensemble are a new voice (…) the double bassist and composer is forging his own path between jazz and classical music.

Michael Wollny

Award-winning bassist Carl Wittig founded the Aurora Oktett in 2016. The band, consisting of a string quartet, saxophone, trumpet, bass, and drums, released its second album, Continuity and Resonance, on 24 January 2025 on XJAZZ Music. The Aurora Oktett seeks to create music that blends diverse timbres and structures. Over the past eight years, the ensemble has evolved beyond conventional categories, exploring new possibilities by fusing structured compositions with improvisational freedom.

Their latest album builds on this concept, presenting a sophisticated interplay between classical forms and jazz expression. "It’s not about showcasing individual skills but about creating something greater together," says Carl Wittig. "It’s a gentle and subtle approach that still allows for outbursts and intensity—that’s how I want to be moved."
